The reinforcement for concrete slabs for coastal defence work, embankments etc., consists of a grid made up from a large number of metal bars (1). This gives a high resistance to horizontal forces, and grids can be superimposed to give a structural member of the required height. Each bar has a hole at each end, which may be circular or elongated, so that pins may be inserted to connect two or more ends. A grid can thus be made up of a series of triangles or a set of squares. Spacers may also be used, or bosses may be incorporated at the holes.
