The pulsed laser produces e.G. 200 picosecond light pulses and consists of an pulsed laser with an electrooptical shutter, a laser amplifier and an absorber at the beam output to absorb beam energy below a given threshold and to allow energy above this threshold to pass through. The laser amplifier consists of an yttrium aluminium garnet monocrystal doped with neodymium or phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) doped with neodymium. The amplifier sharpens the laser pulse leaving the shutter (3db width = 2 nsec) to less than e.g. 1 nsec. The pulse's tail, caused by the amplifier, is removed by the absorber.
