A mixer for preparing a controlled density cement slurry for use in e.g. oil and gas wells is claimed. Dry cement is supplied in a first direction to a mixing chamber while a flat jet of carrier liq. is directed through the chamber in a direction normal to the first direction from a nozzle to an aligned outlet part of the chamber, the jet intersecting the incoming stream of cement. The nozzle is rotatable about its axis to adjust the orientation of the jet about its longitudinal axis and thereby control the amount of cement which becomes entrained in the jet. Density variations can be effected rapidly and without requiring variation in the rate of flow of the carrier liquid.
