The cooler comprises a chamber in which a fluid e.g. water is contacted with atmospheric air, and at least one air outlet opening which is provided along its inner periphery with a lining (15) of sound-absorbing material. At the outlet opening may be a ring (14) for receiving the annular lining which is partially covered with a grid (16) which is attached to the ring along its edges (17, 18) on both sides of the lining, to fix the lining to the ring. Alternatively, the ring may include rods protruding vertically along its inner periphery to fix the lining to the ring. Water outlet openings (19) are pref. formed at regular intervals in the bottom of the ring which may be curved downwards towards the outlet openings. The cooler may include an air outlet pipe (6) of which the inner surface is lined with sound-absorbing material over at least part of its height.
