Process for mfg. alkaline beta-alumina which contains none of the allotropic variety beta", where an intimate mixt. is mad made of controlled amts. of alumina powders and =2 cpds. of the same alkali metal, so that a predetermined wt. ratio is obtd. between the aluminium and the alkali metal, the first of the two cpds. being the carbonate or the aluminate. The second alkaline cpd. consists of =1 fluoride, and the mixt. of powders is heated at 1000-1550 degrees C, for a time which is inversely proportional to the temp. and between 2-60 mins. The heating is pref. undertaken in an atmos. which is not confined, and the fluoride is pref. a double fluoride of Al and the alkali metal. Used as a solid electrolyte in electrochemical generators, such as sodium-sulphur generators the beta-phase being more stable than bet". A highly pure matl. free from beta", is obtd. at relatively low cost.
