Monitoring device for the water supply system of a washing machine or dishwasher which is also responsive to water leakage in the system in the machine to trip the water supply has an electro-magnetic valve which when energised supplies water to the machine and which is associated with a contact (s) in a water level control circuit, to de-energise the valve and stop the water supply when a predetermined level has been reached. When a leakage sensor detects a leakage it activates a control circuit which trips a contact for tripping the energising circuit of the magnetic valve. A single valve is used for metered water supply and detection of water leakage in the water system of the machine.
