In an air compressing engine with fuel injection, means are provided by which the fuel injection pump 13 is preset by control means 14 to the required setting III during starting up of the engine and is automatically reset to the stop position I when the system is switched off by operator- controlled switch 5. Operation of the fuel injection pump control means may be by an engine oil pressure- dependent switch 6, the operation of which controls an electromagnetic valve 8 to actuate the fuel pump control means 12 by means of fluid under pressure. The engine may be stopped manually by operation of a mechanical valve 9 influencing the fuel pump control means 12 and the engine may have an exhaust brake 15 operable either by the electromagnetic valve 8 or by the mechanical valve 9.
