The raw casting for the roller of a steel rolling mill is cast with a riser at one end which has to be removed before the centre can be drilled for subsequent machining. This is simplified by first supporting the casting (6) on two cradles (1, 2) which run on rails (3). A parting tool (12) mounted on a bogy (11) cuts off the riser (10). The centres are then drilled in each end by the travelling drills (17, 18) after which the casting is removed and transferred to a lathe for turning the outside dia. This method of removing the riser (10) eliminates the need for making a centre hole in the riser before it is removed by machining.
