The approach rate of several parts to be flash welded simultaneously is automatically controlled by measuring the flash welding current densities of the butt joints and converting them into d.c. voltages. The max. voltage is compared with a desired voltage setting and any deviation is used to control the approach rate of the butt joints. Several butt joints of large area can thus be welded simultaneously with a high dynamic stability. The mfrg. costs are reduced by a factor of 18, compared with manual arc welding. The labour productivity rises by a factor of 70 and the quality of the welded articles is improved.
