The machine which inserts posts in the soil has a mobile chassis with a thruster pressing the post into place. A magazine accommodates a number of posts, and there is a grab moving to and fro on the chassis, bringing the posts in turn into position below the thruster ram (9). An earth boring tool can also be provided movable in the chassis between a first position below the ram and a second one alongside it. The magazine can be divided into a series of compartments in which rows of posts are accommodated alongside each other. Independent thrusters and guides deliver the posts in succession to the grab.
