1508914 Shaft furnace UNITIKA Ltd 11 June 1975 [12 June 1974 23 Jan 1975] 33602/77 Divided out of 1508913 Heading F4B A furnace for carrying out the method of reactivating spent carbon described in the Parent Specification has a ring header into which burners discharge, ports being arranged to discharge hot gas to the periphery and to an inner zone of the shaft. A shaft furnace for regenerating spent activated carbon comprises a feed port 102 above an upper treatment sleeve 113 spaced from the outer furnace shell 114 and co-operating with a second internal sleeve 105, which forms the inner wall of an annular combustion chamber 107 supplied with fuel and not more than the stoichiometric amount of air by tangential burners. An annular, downwardly delivering gas distributor 110 supported by pipes 111, and outlets 109 ensure uniform distribution of the inert gases formed in the combustion chamber. The annular distributor may be replaced by a cruciform distributor (Fig. 6). An annular shaft furnace, Fig. 7, has inner and outer combustion chambers 213, 212 fed by tangential burners 218, 216 and delivering gases through outlets 215, 214.
