1500633 γ-Aminobutyric acid and #-aminocaproic acid INST ELEMENTOORGANICHE SOEDIN AKAD NAUK SSSR 24 Dec 1975 52830/75 Heading C2C A process for making an #-aminocarboxylic acid of formula where n is 1 or 2, comprises telomerizing ethylene with a methyl ester of a haloacetic acid of formula where R is a C 1-4 alkyl group, and either X = Br and m = 1 or X = Cl and m = 2 or 3 in the presence of a free-radical initiator to give a compound of formula and (a) when X = Br, reacting the telomer with ammonia to give an alkyl ester of the desired compound; or (b) when X = Cl, reducing the telomer to one of the same formula where X = Cl and m = 1 and then reacting the latter with ammonia to give an alkyl ester of the desired compound and finally hydrolysing the aminoester products of (a) or (b) above.
