Electrical supply to a lighting unit (2) comprises the application of a potential difference in the form periodic impulses having a frequency in the band (+-)5 to (+-)50 KHz. Each pulse has a max. amp. which is just sufficient to energise the lamp (2). The drive circuit (3) consists of a full wave rectifier receiving an input AC drive current. The full rectified output of circuit (3) is applied to an oscillator circuit (4) comprised of a transistor transformer circuit feeding a capacitor (5).
