The fixing is used surgically to hold together the sternum and the rib cage of a patient. It is applied externally and consists of a plate (3g) with clamps (1a) fixed to the sternum (2) at suitable points. Around the edges of the plates are several support pads (4a). These stand away (12a) rom the plate and bear (6) against the rib cage. Pressure is applied by traction between clamps and supports. The pressures and relative positions between the two parts are achieved by means of an adjuster screw on the plate, or by each sternum clamp being provided with an individual threaded end (8, 10).
