Acid-modified polyacrylonitrile or polyester articles are dyed uniformly with dye baths contg. =1 basic dyestuffs and 0.1-3, pref. 0.5-2 g/l. of levelling agents of formula (I), and 0-0.6 g/l of a permanent retardant. In the formula, R is opt. satd. 10-20C aliphatic radical; R' is a statistical average over a large no. of molecules, H or 0.20% pref. 0-18% and an Me or Et radical for 100-80%, pref. 100-82%; X- is the equiv. of an anion; n = 1 or 2; m = 0 or 1. (I) have the excellent levelling efficacity of permanent retardants coupled with the low permanence of temporary retardants.
