A bacteriological peptone (I) is obtd. from human placental residues (left after the placenta has been ground in the presence of cellulose, extd. with water and alcohol, and the residue compressed), by treatment with water and wate-sol. papaine at pH 7 and 70-80 degrees C for 2-4 hours, then 105 degrees C for 1 hour, and th liq. phase filtered and dried to give (I). Used for prepn. of bacteriological culture media, in parenteral feeding and in the mfr. of cosmetic products.
