A mixt. of phenolic cpds. is sepd. into its components by passing a solvent (I) into a column contg. a packed suspension of polyvinyl pyrrolidone particles in a solvent (II) and a soln. of the phenolic mixt. in the solvent (II), the solvents (I) and (II) being of the same nature but the concn. of (I) varying with time being initially that of (II) and falling progressively to a predetermined final value so as to establish a gradient and cause separate elution of the phenolic components in the column. The process is based on the effect the number and position of the OH gp. have on the solubility of the components in solvents of varying concns. and obviates difficulties met with in prior art, e.g. chromatography. It is partic. applicable to the determination of phenolic acids in plants to study their metabolism as well as in other fields e.g. pharmaceutical, enological, ecological, medical, etc.
