The contact lens is of transparent material in the centre at least, such as PMMA or silicone rubber. To avoid stretching, the side bearing against the corneal surface has surface structures extending at least over the securing portion of the lens. The lens is formed by moulding, and the negative for these structures is formed in the mould used for its prodn. The structure negative can be formed in the mould by a chemical or mechanical machining process, the mould being typically a glass punch in which it is etched. Alternatively it can be a metal punch, shaped by electrolytic erosion. The differences in height over the surface can be =1 mu.
