Transfer between decades in roller type mechanical counters - using transfer gear to prevent motion of higher order decade wheel until decade changeover is required
Coupled decade rollers used in mechanical counting devices use a transfer gear to provide decade changeover and to ensure that the higher decade is inhibited until this point is reached. The transfer gear (5) is located between the lower (1) and higher (2) decade wheels. Some teeth on the transfer gear locate against the top surface of the lower wheel (1) and other mesh with dogs on the higher one. The lower wheel is therefore free to index until transfer is required. At this point the inhibiting teeth locate in a notch (11) in the lower decade wheel and a single indexing of the higher decade wheel occurs.
