The automatic a. c. switch disconnects a house's mains supply from the street junction box when no electrical appliances are switched on. This ensures that the house mains circuit has no voltage applied to it and thereby avoids current loss due to small earth and phase faults. Current flowing in the phase line is monitored by a transformer whose primary is in the line. The voltage to earth of the same phase line is also measured. The measured current and voltage are combined to determine the impedance of the house circuit, i. e. whether a load is connected or not and to operate a circuit breaker if no load is present.
