Castings are made using a lost pattern made of a foamed material and embedded in a fine-grained, loose moulding material held in position by a vacuum. When molten metal is poured into the mould, the pattern is converted to gas removed by the vacuum. The vacuum also draws fresh air into the mould, at least partly through pipes ending near the hottest parts of the mould cavity, so the air functions as a coolant; and the currents of air are maintained until the castings have solidified. Pref. the casting plant includes a closed moulding box filled with air inlet pipes and holes, through which air is drawn by a vacuum pump. The vacuum removes all the gases created by the pattern and evolved by the molten metal, and also utilises the incoming air to cool the castings so casting time is reduced.
