Optimisation and development of catalysts has following features: (a) carrying out of various heterogeneous catalytic reactions in experimental reactor in which reaction parameters and gas compsn. can be measured. Effects of carriers, degree of impregnation, means of catalyst introduction can all be studied; (b) the geometric structure of individual catalysts can be characterised by REM, light microscopy and X ray structure analysis before, during and after reactor. (c) The electronic structure of the catalyst can be determined by electron measurements, conductivity measurements, photoelectric emissions or electron impact stimulated desorption; (d) characterisation of the chemical structure of the catalytic surface by SIMS, SAM, AES or ESCA before and after reaction, (e) means of transferring a catalyst sample to a separate device for further tests, (f)examination of conditions during reaction to determine their effect, (g) use of gravimetric adsorption and desorption to determine the reaction mechanism. For use in optimising catalyst to reduce energy and material usage and suppress undesirable side reactions. By examining all the facets of the reaction, it will be possible to select exactly the correct catalyst, support, conditions, etc.
