Zn is extracted from Zn oxide ores and/or roasted ZnS concentrates by leaching and volatilising the leach residues. After neutral leaching, the leach residue contg. a large amt. of undissolved Zn, is dried and contacted in a fluidised state and in a reducing medium, with hot gases. Zn as well as other easily volatilised metal cpds. are evaporated and pptd. as their oxides. The non-volatilised cpds. are recovered as a slag and the mixt. of oxides is subjected to neutral leaching. Ores with high impurity contents may be treated to give high Zn recovery without requiring treatment of the residues to avoid pollution. Cyclone melting furnaces can be used with a consequent reduction in the space occupied.
