To protect the equipment connected to the aerial (1), and anyone working thereon at the time, from the consequences of a lighting strike diverter elements and a fuse are connected to the aerial lead. Directly coupled to the antenna is a spark gap (2) one side of which is at earth potential. A fast acting fuse (3) is in series with the aerial lead, and on the side of the output terminal (5) a surge diverter (4) is provided, also connected to earth. Acting in combination, these elements serve to limit the currents and voltages resulting from a lighting strike to acceptable values, and to disconnect the aerial. A current of 100kA can be interrupted in 10 microseconds. The remaining voltage surge is of low energy content and can be suppressed by conventional diode circuits in the equipment input stage.
