The dual circuit brakes are operated by a master brake cylinder with a main piston (23) to provide a first pressure level in a first circuit, and a floating piston (18) between the first pressure and a second pressure level (24) linked to the second circuit. The floating piston moves over a shaft extension (30) on the first piston, with its rearwards movement limited by a stop (11). A locking peg (12) locks the position of the floating piston if the pressure in the second circuit fails. The locking peg is held in the 'off' position by the pressure in the second circuit, so that the piston can move with brake application. The system ensures that if either circuit fails then the remaining circuit is operated without increasing the pedal travel.
