Reinforced sapphire for use in machine components of precision machines and record player needles is prepd. by diffusing foreign atoms into at least the surface of a sapphire body based on aluminium oxides. The ions of the foreign atoms pref. have a radius of 0.2-1.5 esp. 0.3-1.2A degree. =2 different types of foreign atoms being diffused. The atoms are pref. Be,B,In,Si,Sn,Pb,Bi,Ta,Cr or esp. Ti. When two foreign atoms are used the ions of the first pref. as a radius of 0.57-1.2A degrees and of the second pref. have a radius of 0.3-0.57A degrees. Diffusion of the ions is pref. effected by heating for 0.1-7 esp. 1-3 hrs. at 800-1600 degrees C in a vacuum or an inert, oxidising, nitride-forming or carbonising gas.
