As in the Steffer process, the molasses is diluted with cold water and the saccharose contained therein pptd. by addn. of quicklime and the molasses is filtered, there being added to the molasses, at the latest during the cold pptn. stage, an electrolyte which is a neutral or acid salt, pref. selected from CaCl2, NaCl, Mgcl2, Ca(NO3)2 and sodium citrate, in amt. of at least 50 m. equiv/100 g saccharose.
