Gel mass consists essentially of a humectant, pref. glycerol, dissolved in an aq. colloidal solution of hectorite clay which is present in an amount sufficient for the formation of a gel mass. An alternative type of gel consists essentially of an aq. colloidal soln. of hectorite clay in an amount sufficient for the formation of a gel mass and a peptisator, pref. a water-soluble ammonium, potassium or sodium salt of a condensed phosphoric acid, the gel being obtained by heating the liquid aqueous colloidal soln. to a temp. at which it is converted into a gel. Pref. a pigment or filled-capsules, advantageously contg. a pigment, are suspended int he gels. The gels are useful for the prodn. of toothpastes, cosmetics, foodstuffs etc. They are also useful as glass-cleaning agents and agents for removing carbonaceous dirt from surfaces. The gels can easily be removed from surfaces e.g. the skin by rinsing with water, which is advantageous when used in toothpastes and cosmetics and when used as a cleaning agent. Toothpastes contg. the gels have good plaque-removing props., and leave a pleasant fresh feeling in the mouth. The gels can also be advantageously used as the basis of candies etc.
