Sintered magnesia is mfd. from magnesite or similar raw material by calcining at the sintering temp. Prior to calcining, the raw material is treated with an aq. soln. of a water-sol. calcium salt which forms CaO during calcining. The pref. raw material is thermally pre-treated magnesite esp. partly or completely calcined caustic magnesite, whereas the aq. soln. contains pref. calcium nitrate or calcium acetate applied by spray or drips so that the CaO content in the final prod. is min. 0.5% higher than its initial value and/or the ratio CaO:SiO2 is at least 2:1. The process is used for example, in the mfr. of basic refractories. It avoids the formation of cpds. with a low m. pt. in the calcined magnesia.
