In principle the engine drives a gearbox with output shafts which are connected to the wheels, via secondary speed reducers. The speed reduction ratio in these reducers is at least 10 and pref. more than 20, so that torques on the gearbox output shafts are reduced. Splitting of the overall speed reduction between the gearbox and the secondary units may also allow braking to be applied on the gearbox output shafts and also lead to reductions in the brake size. The speed reducers may comprise a two stage gear train, or an epicyclic arrangement.
