The collimator has a cylindrical outer structure with an axial passage extending over its full length; the passage having the form of a truncated cone, the widest section of which is located where the neutron flux is at its max. At the end where the passage is narrowest, a diaphragm of a material capable of absorbing neutrons is positioned. This has a number of holes of different dia. and the motor shaft by which it is rotated, is placed so that any opening selected can be aligned to the axis of the passage for the beam. In the axial direction from the point of max. flux, the structure comprises, a plate of neutrophagous material, a plug of a composite material capable of thermalising and absorbing neutrons and gamma-rays, a second plug of a material which absorbs neutrons. Inside the passage through which absorbs neutrons. Inside the passage through the structure there is a stopper of a material which absorbs gamma-radiation and transmits neutrons. The whole of the structure including the diaphragm is enclosed in an outer envelope. The collimator is an easily handled unit which is placed in one of the channels through the biological protection of the reactor. It is thus more accessible during the stoppages of the reactor and the necessary work for maintenance changing or modification. Its structure is moreover less subject to irradiation.
