The length of a wire wound coil is automatically produced to provide a predetermined value of resistance. The wire (1) is fed through a high frequency coil (2) that generates an eddy current output dependent upon diameter and conductivity of the wire. A length measuring wheel (3) generates an output from a transducer (4) for each unit of length (1) passed through the coil. The transducer signal gates (5) and eddy current metering circuit (6). An A/D converter produces incremental values of resistance that are continuously summed and compared with a reference value. When the required resistance value is attained a cutting device is actuated.
