Prodn. of an immune response to antigens in a subject, esp. those responsible for disorders of mucosa, by firstly prestimulating the mucosa by contact with an agent, supportable by the mucosa, which causes the appearance in the tissue of immunocompetent cells, notably plasmocytes, after a sufficiently long time of contact. In the second immunization stage after a sufficient interval to produce the above effect, the mucosa is contacted with the immunogenic agent. Provides more effective immunization of mucosa, esp. the nasal mucosa by greater proliferation of antibodies. Used for vaccination against bacterial, viral or parasitic disorders, esp. against influenza. Typically, rabbits were prestimulated with aq. NaCl by nasal installation for 6 days, and then vaccinated with anti-influenza monovalent inactivated virus, strains A/Hong Kong/1/68/(H3N2) with a titre of 1200 iu/0.5 ml. Serum antibodies were up to 12,500.
