The emergency manually operated control overrides the control system for an aircraft jet engine. The clutch which engages the operating shaft moves the shutters in the jet duct to the fully open position if the shutters are already beyond a predetermined critical point. If this critical point has not been reached then the shutters are moved to the fully closed position. The manually operated lever (54) is attached to a shaft (60) with a piston (60a). When an emergency occurs, fluid at pressure raises the cylinder (200) so that the lug (204) engages the wedge shaped slot (61aa) and thereby transmits the drive to the output shaft (61). An error detection system actuates an electric motor which adjusts the angular position of a control lever.
