A cast metal part is mfd. esp. in precious metals by completely coating a carbonisable plant or vegetable with a refractory covering; and baking so that the plant is completely carbonised, thus leaving its impression in the coating to form a mould which is filled with precious metal to obt. an exact replica of the original plant or vegetable. The coating is pref. preceded by a petrifaction treatment, and the refractory is pref. a plaster mixt. of asbestos powder and silica sand applied by spraying, the mould obtd. being placed in a cylinder to facilitate baking in stages up to 900 degrees C and casting. Used mfg. replicas of branches, flowers, fruit etc. for jewellery and decoration. By spraying directly onto the plant, etc. the extremely fine surface structure is reproduced in the casting. A separate pattern is not required.
