The leaching process includes (a) milling the concentrate to below 40 mu m in a ball mill or similar plant; (b) fine milling in an attrition mill; (c) leaching in acid soln. contg. chloride ions and using O2 under press. Pref. 1-10(3)wt.% NaOH, w.r.t. the wt. of the concentrate, is added to the milling liq. to reduce agglomeration. The leaching soln. pref. contains 0.2-1g, esp. 0.6g of chloride ions per litre The amt. of copper extracted is substantially increased by using an attrition mill of the type employed in the pigment-or hard metal- industries, the mill reducing the grain size of the ore concentrate to e.g. 3 mu m.
