The copier uses a magnetic brush and semiconducting toner. The brush is covered with an insulating coating (7) with a resistance of at least 103 (pref. 105) ohm/cm2. When the electrostatic image is developed, a charge is induced in the drum (8) by the magnetic brush, but due to the insulation (7) not in the conducting or semi-conducting toner particles, which are thus less liable to adhere to the uncharged image areas.
