The scoop excavator has an articulated arm with the scoop rotating about a horizontal axis. The scoop is readily changed over from deep excavation position to overhead unloading position. This involves turning the scoop round so that its cavity opening faces downwards on excavation and upwards on overhead working position. The scoop (4) is held on a rotating gear ring (7) and it is moved by a hydraulic motor (9) actuated pinion (8). The scoop rotates on a shaft (6) at right angles to the horizontal shaft (5). The shaft (6) is locked after the scoop is rotated into selected position. The locking pin (11) engages with a perforated or toothed plate (10).
