Washing and cleaning compsns. contain (a) an anionic, nonionic, zwitterionic or amphoteric organic surfactant (I); and (b) as P-free builder, alpha,alpha'-dihydroxyadipic acid (II), pref. used as its water-soluble salt. The wt. ratio (II): total (II) is 1:3-35:1. Specifically the Na salt of (II) is used. (II) does not cause eutrophication of surface waters and is stable against hydrolysis. A typical compsn. contains (wt.%) oleyl alcohol condensed with 5 mole ethylene oxide 1.5; (II) 30; triphosphate 20; Na silicate 47 and K dichloroisocyanurate.
