The system reduces the high starting current of, in particular, hand held power tools so that the windings are subject to lower mechanical stress and also that specially fused supply circuits are not needed. In series with the load (V) is a non-linear, NTC resistor (R1) and a relay (Re1). In parallel with the load is a similar resistor (R2), preferably of high ohmic value, which is also in series with a relay (Re2). When the main switch (S) is closed current is drawn by the load, the first relay (Re1) picks up and closes contact (K1) to make the circuit to the parallel path (3). The current flow to the load is damped by the non-linear resistor (R1).
