The frictional-action cross-flow fan is of the type comprising a rotor consisting of a number of parallel discs (4) and arranged in a housing (1) which encloses the rotor in three planes. The discs are spaced and secured on a drive shaft (3) arranged in the housing which forms a rectangular section duct (5) with flow direction at right angles to the shaft. The fourth boundary (9) of the duct is parallel to the shaft and intersects the rotor discs. The fourth boundary may be the surface of a liquid, such as water, into which the rotor is partially immersed. The discs may be covered with a liquid absorbent layer.
