In a process for making ice by absorption of heat from a container filled with water, heat is applied to the container after ice has formed until the interfaces between the ice and the container have thawed and the container is filled with water to expel the ice (which floats on the water). The vessel, now refilled with water, is again subjected to heat absorption to form further ice. The machine has a comparatively simple control system; can produce 200 lbs of ice per 24 hrs. using a 1/4 H.P. power source, compared with a capacity of 50-60 lbs for a previous machine operating under the same ambient conditions of 80 degrees F. This achieved by employing a system in which the thermal capacity of the refrigeration circuit is high compared with that of the vessels contg. the water to be frozen.
