The tuning capacitor is disc shaped and has a high frequency screened tube for fitting through the walls of a waveguide. There is a disc shaped dielectric material with a large loss angle at the entry of one end of the tube through the wall of the waveguide. There is a second smooth surface capacitor lining at the other end of the tube, with a conducting lead connected to the centre. The size of the radius of the disc shaped capacitor element (31, 32) is chosen to be an uneven multiple of a quarter wavelength of the dominant mode in the waveguide (11). The thickness of the dielectric (31) is smaller than the diameter of the tube at the entry through the waveguide wall (23). The dielectric disc is made with a recess for aligning with the centre of the waveguide.
