The orthodontic device (10) which encompasses the tooth, comprises a band of uneven thickness whereby only the proximal part of the band is at least partially thinner than the rest of the band. Pref. the thinner section is also harder and runs right across the width of the band from the upper edge to the lower edge, it can be thicker at the upper edge only or at both edges. The band is made of a malleable metal and has buccal, distal, mesial and lingual sides, of which at least part of the distal and mesial sides are thinner than the buccal and lingual sides. The orthodontic device can thus be slipped over the tooth without the necessity of comparatively wide interstices between the teeth.
