The caliper rule consists of a single sliding head (7) of metal or plastic having one measuring blade (4) for internal measurements and a second, larger blade (5) for external measurements. The slider has a central channel with a raised spine running along the centre line. The raised strip carries elongated guide pads near each end (9, 10). The channel side walls are chamfered. A guide rail (2) runs within the channel in the slider and has bevelled edges which engage with the chamfered walls of the slider channel. The rail also has a longitudinal groove on its underside in which the guide pads on the channel base run. In the case of a metal slider, the pads may be screwed in place and therefore may be replaced when worn, thus restoring the mating accuracy of the instrument components.
