The matrix printing head for a printing or typing unit has to be replaced even if only one of its matrix of needles has exceeded its useful service life. In order to extend the service life of such heads, additional printing wires are provided to share the task of symbol formation. In an example the standard matrix of 7 x 5 used to form the symbols has its usual complement of seven wires (S1 to S7) extended to eight. In one time interval the wires (S1-S7) are used to form the symbol while in a subsequent interval wires (S2-S8) are employed. In this case, therefore the service life of the head is increased by around 33%. The provision of two additional wires increases the life by around 50%.
