A method of controlling movement of a shade over a lamp, e.g. for altering the colour, employs a screw drive which raises and lowers the shade or in an alternative design rotates the shade. The shade (3) can be guided vertically by vertical wires (12) forming a cage, and the screw is a spiral wire (1) alongside. This spiral is mounted between a top support (4) above the lamp and a bottom support (11) below the bottom limit or travel. These supports fix the position of the spiral but allow it to be rotated about its axis by a suitable drive. A loop of wire (2) passing through the shade, and a corresponding number of coils, raises or loweres the shade as the coil is rotated. In an alternative design rotating the shade, the coil drives the shade from an alongside position.
