Starch is etherified in the presence of NaCl and NaOH with any of the following; benzyl chloride or iodide; (3 - chloropropyl) - or (5- chloroamyl) - benzene; p - eicosanyl benzyl chloride; p - nitro benzyl chloride; dichloro benzyl chloride; 2,3,4,5,6 - pentaethyl - 1- ( - chloropropyl) - benzene or the corresponding bromo derivative or derivative where one ethyl group has been replaced by dodecanyl; 3 - chlorocyclohexene; 3 - chloro - cyclopentene; 5- chloro - 1,3 - cyclohexadiene. Starch is also etherified, in the presence of K 3 PO 4 , with 1- phenyl - 3 - chloro - propene - 1. A size composition for glass fibres comprises a starch ether of a substituted or unsubstituted cyclic hydrocarbon, e.g. one of the above, together with a natural or synthetic wax-like material, e.g. paraffin, montan or microcrystalline wax. Other such materials are listed. The size is suitably an aqueous emulsion containing conventional emulsifiers, together with a cationic lubricant. PVA and/or a cationic acrylic resin may be present to assist the drying and filmforming properties.
