1442056 Treating water with sequestering agents NALCO CHEMICAL CO 25 Oct 1974 46311/74 Heading C1C [Also in Division C2] Scale and corrosion in cooling towers without pH control is inhibited by adding to the cooling water a phospho-ester composition obtained by A, heating an alkanolamine with an organic mixture to 75‹ to 85‹ C. with mixing, said organic mixture consisting of a polyhydroxy compound (other than ethylene glycol and alkanolamines), ethylene glycol and a monoether of ethylene glycol, the ratio of alkanolamine : organic mixture being from 80 : 20 to 20 : 80; B, adding 133 to 300% by weight, based on the amine, of P 2 O 5 over 4 to 8 hours and increasing the temperature to 120‹ C. at a constant rate over this time period; C, increasing the temperature to 130‹ 140‹ C. over ¢ to 2 hours; D, heating at 140‹ C. for 1 hour; E, adding a monoether of ethylene glycol and heating at 130‹ to 140‹ C. for ¢ to 2 hours; F, filtering and recovering the product; and G, optionally dispersing therein 5 to 30% by weight based on the phosphoester of a watersoluble zinc salt.
