The unit is for machines cutting veneer wood, the machine having a frame supporting a table onto which a piece of wood is fixed to be cut into veneer sheets, and a knife actuated by a double-acting ram connected between it and the table. Oil from the two chambers of the ram is returned to a reservoir, an and a mechanism indexes the knife or table at right angles to the direction of the knife stroke after each cut for the thickness of a sheet. Between the pump (17) and the pipes (24, 31) supplying the opposite ends of the ram (9) is a reservoir containing gas under pressure (19), and means are provided to shut off communication between this reservoir and the one end of the ram, and connect it simultaneously with the other end, at the end of each stroke.
